A visitor’s guide

The art of Sudoku

Fill each row, each column, and each outlined region with the digits 1–9, once each. Every puzzle has exactly one solution. The starting clues are fixed.

I

Classic

Nine familiar 3×3 boxes. Find what is missing, compare the possibilities, and let each placement lead to the next.

II

Irregular

Nine connected shapes replace the square boxes. Follow the thick outlines: every region still holds nine different digits.

III

Ice Breaker

Break every ice block using correct placements in unfrozen cells. The Sudoku rules remain Classic.

Ice Breaker: how the waves work
  1. Frozen squares have one, two, or three ice layers. They cannot accept final numbers until completely thawed.
  2. A correct number placed in an empty, unfrozen square sends a wave up, down, left, and right.
  3. Each wave passes through unfrozen squares and stops at the first frozen square in that direction, removing one layer. One placement can strike up to four blocks.
  4. The highlighted ice blocks show where a selected square would send its waves. This preview does not reveal its digit.
  5. Every accepted correct placement costs one move and becomes locked. Wrong numbers and pencil marks never break ice; rejected numbers count as mistakes and cost no moves.
  6. Undo restores the whole previous turn, including ice and moves. You cannot erase and replay an accepted number to gain extra waves.
  7. In Challenge, remove all ice within the move budget. If moves run out, Undo, Restart, or continue in separately recorded Practice Mode. Relaxed has no move limit.
  8. After breaking all ice, choose Finish the Sudoku to fill the rest without a move limit.

A small guided lesson

Controls & pencil marks

Select a square, then press a number or use the on-screen number pad. In Number first, choose a digit, then select the squares where you want to place it. Notes adds small pencil marks instead of final numbers.

The Undo and Redo buttons let you revisit your moves. Starting clues cannot be edited. Settings controls duplicate highlighting, solution checking, and automatic removal of conflicting notes.

Hints, mistakes & completion

Hints explain a logical next step and highlight the relevant cells. Apply the hint only when you are ready. Revealing an answer is labeled separately and is not a logical deduction. Using hints or reveals is recorded as assistance.

Duplicate checking compares a digit with its row, column, and actual region. Optional solution checking rejects entries that disagree with the saved answer and marks Classic or Irregular attempts assisted. Ice Breaker always rejects an incorrect final entry.

A Sudoku is complete only when every cell is filled and every row, column, and region is valid. Ice Breaker challenge success means all ice is removed within budget; finishing the remaining Sudoku is optional.

Saving, daily selections & privacy

Your puzzle, notes, history, elapsed active time, settings, and results are saved locally after meaningful actions. Pause stops the timer, and switching away from this tab pauses active time automatically.

Daily selections come from the bundled 240-puzzle collection, based on your device’s local date. They do not download new puzzles and can overlap puzzles you have already played.

No account or network service is needed to play. A browser reset or clearing site data removes local saves. Use Settings → Export progress to keep a backup or move to another device.
