Keep this beside your puzzle

A guide to the letters.

Begin with a pattern

A monoalphabetic substitution replaces each A–Z letter with exactly one different letter. If encrypted Q means H, every Q in that puzzle means H. Another encrypted letter cannot also mean H. No encrypted letter stands for itself.

For example, QWEEZ might decode to HELLO. Notice the two E symbols: a word with a doubled middle letter narrows the possibilities. A five-letter word with the pattern 1–2–3–3–4 is different from one with five distinct letters.

Small discoveries

Start with single-letter words: they are usually A or I. Common two-letter words include OF, TO, IN, IS, IT, AS, AT, BE, BY, and WE. Common three-letter words include THE, AND, FOR, YOU, ARE, and NOT. These are suggestions, not rules. A wrong hypothesis is useful if it helps you reject an impossible pattern.

A recurring three-letter word might be THE. Try its middle letter as H, then examine the other places it appears. If it makes nonsense in several words, revise it. Do not assume every common word must appear.

Letter frequency

E, T, A, O, I, and N are common in English, but a short poem may use very different proportions. Use the frequency panel as supporting evidence. The most common encrypted letter does not always stand for E. Word endings such as ING, ED, ER, and LY can be more useful than a raw count.

Punctuation helps

An apostrophe may suggest a contraction or possession. A comma may separate clauses. Poetry line breaks are preserved, and numbers and punctuation are never editable. Very long words wrap within the available phone width.

Controls and aids

Tap a cell, then tap the on-screen alphabet or type a letter. The smaller top character is encrypted; the larger lower character is your guess. All occurrences of your selected character are highlighted, and an outline marks your active position. ◆ marks supplied or revealed mappings.

Arrow keys move; Backspace or Delete clears; Ctrl/Cmd+Z undoes; Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z or Ctrl/Cmd+Y redoes. Skip-assigned navigation can be changed in Settings. If every letter is assigned, turn skipping off or tap the one you want to revise.

Check Progress marks wrong guesses with ! and dashed underlines without supplying replacements. Gentle Hint gives an observation. Reveal Letter supplies a permanent correct mapping, preferring a selected incorrect mapping. The aid count remains even when you undo. Show Solution is confirmed and counted separately.

Choose a pace

Relaxed allows unlimited aids. Challenge shares a per-puzzle aid budget across checks, gentle hints, and letter reveals. Frequency and alphabet tracking are free in both styles. The difficulty supplies three starting letters on Easy, one on Normal, and none on Hard. Ordinary guesses are not penalized. An unassisted completion means no optional hints, checks, or immediate feedback beyond these supplied starters.

Saving and the daily puzzle

Progress is automatically saved in this browser for multiple puzzles. It is not synchronized across devices. Private browsing, clearing browser data, or denied storage can prevent persistence. Export custom puzzles if you want durable copies. An explicit warning appears if a save fails.

The daily selection comes from the included collection using your device’s local calendar date. It is not newly downloaded or published online. If the selected puzzle is already complete, it retains that completion. Daily statistics count dates on which you opened a daily selection whose puzzle is solved.

Mystery notebook

Each case has six clues in sequence. Solving or explicitly revealing a clue unlocks the next. Only discovered plaintext appears in your notebook. After the sixth clue, choose a conclusion; a wrong deduction does not erase evidence. Restarting a clue also clears later clues in that case so the order remains consistent.

Speech and accessibility

Optional narration uses the browser’s speech synthesis voices. Available voices vary; local voices can work offline. The game always cancels the previous utterance before starting another. Stop Speaking is in the footer. Introductions and individual encrypted letters can be read without speaking the answer. Completed passages and explicitly revealed solutions can be read aloud. No speech is required to play.

Display settings offer light and dark puzzle surfaces, contrast, and adjustable letter sizes. Touch needs only a tap. The keyboard has no fixed overlay that can cover the puzzle. Reduced-motion preferences are respected.

Content

The collection includes 30 original sayings, 30 original poems, 30 ESV Bible passages, and 30 clues across five original mysteries. Each category has ten Easy, ten Normal, and ten Hard puzzles. Original game writing was created with AI assistance. It is not poetry by John Wm Beckner and is not presented as a verified historical quotation.
